You know those silly little songs that you make up to soothe your baby? Sometimes they stick around. Here's a little sing-songy one that is a favorite of ours. Nice and slow. . . it goes something like this:

This is the sound of a clock, it goes, Tick-tock, Tick-tock. This is the sound of a clock, it goes, Tick-tock, Tick-tock.

For the next verse change it up a little.

This is the sound of a cat, it goes,

Meow, Meow. This is the sound of a cat, it goes, Meow,

Meow.

Got it? It is really simple, you can change it up until your infant falls asleep. Cows, birdies, trucks, lawnmowers, fish = blub, blub. The thing about a simple made up song like this, is when you've sung it a million times since your kid was a baby, it has an almost Pavlovian response if you start singing it again. Great tool for stopping antics and re-directing.

I used it today. The smalls are a little amped-up. Don't know if it's the wind blowing, the chocolate milk I gave them or the excitement about the fairy garden and that we just picked the plants from Kenyon Noble. Being weird little magical beings themselves, it is no wonder that they have latched onto the idea of fairy-folk so intensely. I'll post pictures once it's up. It is going to be fabulous! That is if I can get them to stop climbing the walls.

So, back to the song. My 5 year old added in a couple of riffs of his own. The next All-New verses are his, mine and then his again.

This is the sound of the girl, she goes,

I-don't-want-to-watch-Backyardigans-put-on-Dora. Dora. This is the sound of the girl, she goes, I-don't-want-to-watch-Backyardigans-put-on-Dora.

Dora.

Riiiight. Ok, son. She is only 3. So I gotta help her out.

This is the sound of the boy, he goes,

Make-me-a-peanut-butter-sandwich-quesedilla-and-get-me-an-apple-Please. Mom, Please? This is the sound of the boy, he goes,

Make-me-a-peanut-butter-sandwich-quesedilla-and-get-me-an-apple-Please. Mom, Please?

Giggling, he tosses back this:

This is the sound of a mom, she goes,

What-are-you-doing-stop-that-right-now. Right now. This is the sound of a mom, she goes,

What-are-you-doing-stop-that-right-now. Right now.

Sheesh.
