Happy Mother’s Day to All You Libras Out There

There is a lovely black-and-white photograph on my mantel of my mother at the toothless age of seven in braids; everyone who sees it assumes it’s a photograph of my girl, Hermione. It’s uncanny. Pale with enormous blazing brown eyes, dark hair and fierce brows, my mother and my daughter resemble each other far more closely than either of them resembles me. But it’s not just the color of those eyes, it’s the intensity in them; the vigorous life force that simmers beneath those lush lashes.

Strong, brilliant, passionate lovers of dogs, horses, Audrey Hepburn, anchovies and silk scarves, these two gals share a bond, which – despite my most desperate efforts – I will never fully grasp and which frightens me very much down deep in the recesses of my soul and psyche: They are both Scorpios.

Yes, it’s true. I was raised by a scorpion and then I turned around and gave birth to one. Who knows what kind of karmic payback this might be, but I’m pretty sure I did something relatively appalling in a past life. Please, don’t misunderstand me, I am madly in love with these two scorpions, but they scare me. A lot. And often. Let’s go back to those aforementioned eyes for a minute, OK? Check out this fun fact I discovered online:

It’s well known astrologically that the eyes of a Scorpio can hypnotize

See? I knew it. It’s not just me being paranoid – it’s a true fact.

And it doesn’t help that my own pathetic stars could not be more misaligned with these two femme fatales, because I am – wait for it – a Libra. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the astrological, being a Libra is a little like the Zodiac equivalent of being Jay Leno. Here, let me share with you what my online sources have to say about Libras:

Inside, the Libra is very insecure , they suffer from a lack of self confidence . .  . Libras desperately need love and approval.

Ouch. OK. Now, pair this :

Scorpios tend to dominate and control anyone that lets them, or anyone that they find weak.

With this :

Libras have earned themselves a reputation for being indecisive; they simply do not want to hurt anyone's feelings or cause disorder or friction in a situation.

What do you get?

You get the burden that is mine alone to bear: the daily struggle to stay strong, hold my ground and not get stung by these powerful forces that bookend me generationally. Oh, dear friends, this is not easy! The truth is that this brilliant duo dazzles and distracts me into letting my guard down, and then they wait . . . patiently . . . until the time is right . . . and then they zing me into submission or acquiescence or even tears.

The worst is when they collude, which they have been doing on and off for thirteen years. (I could swear I saw them share a secret handshake just days after Hermione came home from the hospital). By the time Hermione was a toddler, the two of them had honed their takedown technique and perfected an unbeatable strategy for snaring me with their claws.

And so where will I be on Mother’s Day? I will be the proudest, luckiest daughter and mother in town, encircled by these brilliant, beautiful women whom I adore and respect (and fear, of course).  But the most important thing I must remember: Do NOT stare directly into those eyes.

Kisses,

Bozemama
